Scientists create Harry Potter style clock that tracks family members

It seems that Harry Potter mania has hit the scientists too, for they have created a clock that helps track family members.

In the Harry Potter stories, Ron Weasley's family of pureblood wizards has a magic clock with hands assigned to each family member, indicating their location and now the new prototype device from Microsoft Research Cambridge does a similar thing.

Researchers have christened it as the 'whereabout clock,' which enables family members to trace where others are in four broad categories - 'home,' 'work,' 'school' and 'elsewhere.'

However, the creators are expecting that the general nature of the clock's locations overcomes some of the privacy problems that the researchers believe have impeded other location-based services from becoming more prevalent in the marketplace.

FAPESP, Microsoft Award Approximately $500,000 in Academic Funding to Advance Research in Health, Education, Agribusiness and e-Government

SÃO PAULO, Brazil — Nov. 13, 2007 — Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP), also known as the State of São Paulo Research Foundation, and Microsoft Research today announced recipients of approximately $500,000 (U.S.) in funding for academic research focusing on how technology can meet the social and economic challenges of rural and urban communities in Brazil. The five winners represent the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in Campinas, IME in São Paulo and University of São Paulo (USP) in São Carlos.

The selected projects propose creative and multidisciplinary approaches for advancement in the areas of computer science, health and agrarian sciences, computer engineering and linguistics. In addition, these research projects are tied together by the thread of social impact, aiming to bring about change in their associated disciplines.

Apple launches iPhone in Germany, UK

The customers in Germany and Britain lined up to buy the iPhone as it made its European debut on Friday, with Apple Inc hoping to replicate overseas the success, music player and web browser combination phone, has seen in the United States.

In Germany, the phone went on sale at more than 700 T-Mobile shops. Apple hopes to sell 10 million iPhones in 2008, helped by the launch of the iPhone in Europe, then in Asia next year.

Talking Research with New Head of Microsoft Research Asia

On Oct. 30, Hsiao-Wuen Hon, an internationally recognized expert in speech technology, was announced as the new managing director of Microsoft Research Asia, Microsoft’s fundamental research arm in the Asia Pacific region. In his new role, Hon—who had been serving as the lab’s deputy managing director under Harry Shum, recently promoted to corporate vice president—will direct the next phase of growth and innovation for the lab, based in Beijing.

Shum, named chief scientist of Search & Ads at Microsoft in March and promoted to corporate vice president in May, expressed supreme confidence in Hon’s ability to lead the Beijing lab, which has contributed more than 200 technologies to Microsoft products, to continued success.

“I am very pleased to have Dr. Hsiao-Wuen Hon step up to lead Microsoft Research Asia, the world’s hottest computer lab,” Shum said. “Dr. Hon and his new leadership team possess profound experience and knowledge in fundamental research and technology transfer. I am confident that they will lead the lab to greater heights.”

Hon, who has extensive experience in both fundamental research and product development, joined Microsoft Research Asia in 2004 after serving as the architect for Microsoft’s Natural Interactive Services Division andstarting his Microsoft career at Microsoft Research Redmond. During his tenure at the Beijing lab, he has overseen research efforts in Web search, speech and language processing, systems and networking, and Internet media, as well as managing the Search Technology Center, a research-and-development partnership with Live Search.

Married and a father of daughters aged 14 and 10, Hon, 44, recently found time to discuss his background and his plans for the future.

Here's a building that should really get your attention when walking pass it. The Dancing House is considered as one of the more real controversial buildings in Prague . The DH was actually designed by a great architect from California , which only proves that he had done some type of hallucinogen while designing it.

" Robot Building "

The Bank of Asia is a very famous building in Bangkok . It was made way back in 1985, and it's robotic appearance is just a symbol of the modernization of banking. It also has the ability to transform into a mega-robot. So, if Godzilla ever decided to show his green face in the land of Bangkok , they would have to fight!

"Ripley's Building"

If you saw this picture for the first time, you'd probably thought that it was hit by a massive earthquake. But it wasn't. In true fashion of the Ripley Legacy, it was built to reflect the odd 1812 earthquake that measured 8.0 on the rick. The building has now become one of the most photographed in the world because of it.

"The Wilson Hall"

This somewhat modernize building was actually built between 1971 and 1974. It's unique design gives the Wilson Hall a great sense of structure, and a prominent landmark for the skyline. The building provides big laboratories, offices, and supports space for over 1500 scientists. And it houses all kinds of strange experiments.

"135 Degree Angle"

This bizarre house really doesn't have an official name, but it does have a 135 degree angle. So that's what we're going to call it. Unfortunately, the only info we have about this house is that it was built in China or Japan . And that it has a silly pink roof. And if you look real close, you'll notice that it's on a 135 degree damn angle.

"Hotel Sofitel"

This hotel's unique design was directly inspired by the traditional temples in Japan . The Tokyo Sofitel has over 72 rooms, and 11 suites with 3 non-smoking floors. And 5 meeting rooms that includes high-tech boardrooms. Please realize that you have to sell your soul in order to step foot inside this amazing hotel.

" Triangle Building "

We wonder what type of work goes on inside this kind of a building. The unofficial Triangle Building is just a wonder to look at and to ponder over. But, can this be one of the evil headquarters for Scientology or Starbucks? Does this building have triangle bathrooms? There's so many damn questions!

"The Astra Haus"

The strange building is actually a brewery in Hamburg , Germany . The floors can move up or down on it's skinny column core. As of now, the unique building has been destroyed. One of it's more famous beer brands was recently bought by a big refreshment corporation. And that beer brand was called Astra.

"Upside Downer"

Take a journey into the unknown with a building called Wonder Works . It's central Florida 's only upside down attraction. And an amusement park for your mind, and your stoner friends. This odd building has over 100 wacky interactive exhibits for your entire family to experience. But make sure you free your weed before coming.

"Crooked House"

You know that your looking at a real building right? The Crooked House was built in 2004 as an addition at a popular shopping center, and is a major tourist attraction in Sopot , Poland . Will IT Resist the Google Phone At First?

We aren’t the only ones anticipating a culture clash if Google’s mobile operating system becomes widely used. After Google announced the operating system yesterday, we wrote that some information-technology departs were likely to ban devices running it until they figured out how to respond to security questions.

Information Week appears to agree. Google’s operating system could make the mobile phone an even better business tool, it says, partly because information-technology departments could write their own software for mobile devices. But before any of that happens, Information Week says, companies will need to adapt their policies to deal with the new phones’ security and privacy implications.

Computing in the 21st Century 2007: Web Wonders to Unfold

Six hundred years ago, two ancient cities on the east Asian mainland found themselves situated on the cusp of the future. In 1368, the Ming Dynasty ascended to power and installed as its capital the city now known as Nanjing, perched on the south bank of the Yangtze River, 200 miles inland from the East China Sea.

Twenty-six years later and 600 miles to the north, the newly established Joseon Dynasty also relocated its capital, to a city now called Seoul, on the north bank of the Han River, the Yellow Sea 40 miles to the west.

Two mighty rivers. Two dynasties that resonate through the ages. Two illustrious cities, each suffused with portent and promise. Six centuries hence, Nanjing and Seoul, advantageously positioned and redolent with history, again became linked, this time on the cusp of a digital future, during Microsoft Research Asia’s ninth Computing in the 21st Century conference.

GPS Based Navigation Device

A Global Positioning System (GPS) based in-car navigation device, christened "MapmyIndia Navigator", has been launched by MapmyIndia, a leading navigable map data provider.

The sleek smart gadget uses satellites to determine a user's current location anywhere within the country. It guides people, turn by turn, with visual map instructions supported by voice prompts. The gizmo can either be mounted on the windshield or dashboard while driving, or hand carried while sitting in the backseat of the car.

Google gets smarter with mobile players

BANGALORE: The announcement on Tuesday that some 33 players in the mobile phone business had joined Google’s initiative to create a new software platform for Internet-friendly phones will send ripples through the India-based development operations of many of these companies.

The newly formed Open Handset Alliance will support Google’s Android platform for mobile devices — the name derives from the Net search leader’s 2005 acquisition, a mobile software startup.

The new platform — jargon for the software that will fuel the phone and its various functions — has the support of handset makers like Motorola and Samsung; mobile service providers like Sprint, NTT Docomo and China Telecom; chip makers like Intel and Texas Instruments; and pure Internet players like ebay and Skype.

It is almost certain that they are not aiming to create yet another basic phone for the unconnected millions of the world.

Google’s leadership signals that the alliance will target Net-enabled smart phones where the asking price is closer to $200 rather than $ 20.

Otherwise why should all these Net players join in? The announcement also sets at rest persistent rumours of Google launching a G-Phone to answer Apple’s i-Phone challenge.

Clearly the number one search player is not about to get into the device business. India’s position as a cost effective R&D destination will ensure that whoever loses in all this — the alliance will challenge existing platforms from Microsoft, Nokia, Research in Motion, Palm and others — India will win. Why? because many of these Handset Alliance members including Intel, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, Motorola, nVidia, Sirf, WindRiver, and Google itself, have big development teams based in India. Creating compelling applications for the new Android platform will keep these teams busy in the coming months.
